How do I choose the right therapist?
This is an important question. Feeling safe and connected with your therapist is crucial. Research shows that the relationship you create with your therapist is highly predictive of client success/outcomes in therapy. It is also helpful to work with a therapist that has training/expertise in the area of concern you are seeking help for. At Sandstone Psychology we have diversely competent therapists who employ research-based therapy models. Our therapists are carefully selected for their warmth, competence, and passion for helping others. If for some reason you do not feel that you fit well with your therapist, we are happy to refer to another provider within the Sandstone family, or assist you in finding the right fit with another provider in the mental health community.

How do I know which evaluation clinic to choose?
For many individuals, it depends on purpose for the visit, pricing, schedule, and personality fit.  At Sandstone Psychology, we pride ourselves on offering thorough assessments at an affordable price.  In doing so, we strive to focus more on the quality of our assessments rather than trying to see the highest volume of clients.  We also strive to stay up to date on best practices in the field of assessment.  This ensures that we are not using too few of measures, or measures that are somewhat outdated.  We invite you to call for a free consultation to find out for yourself if Sandstone Psychology is a good fit for you.

What are the steps that are involved in an assessment?
Initial Intake: Completed in-person or over the phone.  This is a one hour session with client, or parent(s) if testing a minor, used to conduct clinical interview and gather background information.

Testing Sessions: Typically, one to two sessions of three to four hours used to complete the entire assessment battery (learning disorders).  For ADHD or psychiatric evaluations, clients can fill out paper or computer measures at home.

Scoring, Interpretation, Records Review & Report Writing: Completed by the evaluators and typically takes a few days.

Feedback Session: This is a one hour session where the evaluator will thoroughly explain results and diagnostic decisions.  This hours is also used to cover recommendations that the evaluator will have for the client based on testing results.  Clients will leave with two copies of their evaluation.

How long does the assessment process take?
ADHD and psychiatric evaluations are typically completed within one week.  Learning disorder evaluations may take two to four weeks depending on client availability and the complexity of the testing battery.  We want to ensure that are clients are getting  a thorough evaluation, and that they leave with a solid understanding of testing results and what can be done.

How can I prepare for the testing appointments?
No need to make any special arrangements as testing is intended to capture the client’s typical day-to-day functioning.  However, ensuring a good night’s sleep and proper eating would be advised.

Is testing confidential?
Generally, all information collected during testing will be kept completely confidential.  That being said, there are certain limitations to confidentiality that will be thoroughly explained prior to the onset of testing.  For example, Utah state law dictates that when a clinician receives information about abuse happening to children, elderly, or the disabled, by law the clinician must report the abuse.  This would be one example of a limitation to confidentiality.  Prior to testing, you will sign an informed consent contract, that will cover these limits in detail.  Confidentiality limits may also be different for clients under the age of 18.  The evaluators will cover this during the initial appointment.  All records are kept in a secure, locked area for seven years and then destroyed.
