Josh Norris,
Psy.D Resident Psychologist
Background:
I’m originally from the suburbs of Chicago, and my Jewish and Midwestern roots shape the warmth and authenticity I bring to relationships. I love staying active, which usually involves skiing, running, mountain biking, or hiking. I’m a lifelong (and hopeless) Chicago sports fan, always cheering for the Bears and Bulls despite the constant heartbreak. Friends and clients often describe me as warm, caring, and a little goofy, and I try to bring that energy into the room to help people feel comfortable and at ease. I’m deeply interested in people and religion, fascinated by the ways faith and identity shape our lives. When I’m not working, I can usually be found spending time with my friends, chasing mile times, or searching out new ice cream.
Education and Work Experience:
I received my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School where I trained in community, private practice, and university settings. My clinical experience began at a Jewish community center, where I worked with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including severe mental health challenges. I then completed two years of training in a private practice, providing therapy for clients of all ages and developing experience in long-term therapy and building strong and warm therapeutic relationships. My internship year was at Brigham Young University, where I primarily worked with college-age adults navigating religious concerns, anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, and existential or identity-related issues.
Therapy Approach:
Therapy works best when you feel safe, understood, and supported. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic and humanistic traditions, focusing on building a warm, trusting relationship and helping clients uncover meaningful insights about themselves and relationships. Together, we explore past and present experiences to better understand patterns, challenges, and possibilities for growth. I adapt to each client’s unique needs and have experience working with people of all ages and backgrounds, with a particular focus on college-age and religious adults. My clinical interests include personality disorders, religious concerns (both faith-affirming and faith-transition), LGBTQ+ concerns, identity and existential questions, perfectionism, OCD, anxiety, and mood disorders.
