Intern CMHC

Background:

Born and raised in California to a Hispanic father and a Caucasian mother, Ray offers a unique and inclusive perspective that enriches his counseling approach. Having lived in Taiwan for two years, he speaks conversational Mandarin Chinese, further broadening his cultural competence. For the past 19 years, he has called Utah home.

In addition to professional achievements, Ray has been happily married for 34 years and is a proud parent of four adult children and five grandchildren. The most recent addition to his family circle is Mei Mei, an adorable mini golden doodle. His family life is a source of immense joy and inspiration. Passionate about technology, Ray also enjoys reading, photography, and exploring the wonders of science, hobbies that provide personal enrichment and unique insights into his counseling work.

Education and Work Experience:

With 17 years of dedicated experience in elementary education, Ray brings a wealth of knowledge and a compassionate approach to mental health counseling. Recognizing the challenges faced by his students motivated him to pursue a career in counseling. Holding a master's degree in education and on track to complete a master's degree in mental health counseling in December 2024, he is well-prepared to support clients through their mental health journeys.

Therapy Approach:

Ray is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal growth. He continues to learn different mental health counseling theories, as he must address each client's unique needs. He is drawn to Internal Family Systems, Play Therapy, and mindfulness. However, he acknowledges that the most significant therapeutic tool remains the counselor-client relationship. Regardless of the theoretical approach, he is committed to establishing healthy counseling relationships to ensure your best mental health outcomes. With a blend of professional expertise and a deep understanding of diverse cultural and familial dynamics, Ray is a trusted guide on the path to mental wellness.
