Shaelynn Heaton,
Student PsyD

Background:

Shaelynn is a proud member of Southern Utah University's first cohort of Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students. Shaelynn was raised in Kanab, UT so she has an affinity for the red rocks of Southern Utah. She loves hiking, camping, and spending time outside with her close friends. Although she thrives on consistency, something that will never stay the same is her hair color. She has sported every color of the rainbow, fun split-dyes, and some natural colors too!

Education and Work Experience:

Shaelynn began her collegiate career at Southern Utah University (SUU). As her Bachelor’s degree was coming to a close, SUU introduced their first ever Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Fate or coincidence, she was sold. Within the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology Program Shaelynn has received training in a variety of disciplines and skill sets. She has worked at the SUU Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic for almost a year. She has thoroughly enjoyed serving the community of Cedar City throughout her training and is excited to continue that journey with Sandstone Psychology!

Therapy Approach:

Shaelynn has a strong affinity to the Client-Centered approach in therapy. She believes that empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard are traits that are foundational to the therapeutic relationship. Her primary goal in the therapeutic space is to foster a relationship rooted in the aforementioned traits between her clients and herself. She sees immense value in seeing someone holistically, and believes that view brings a level of warmth and compassion into the therapy room that fuels therapeutic change and improvement. With all of this considered, she also integrates key evidence-based practices to increase efficacy and quality of treatment provided to her clients. These modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Parent Management Training - Brief Behavioral Intervention.
